Dr. William C. Turner, Jr.

Rev. Dr. William C. Turner was a towering witness to the enduring power of Black faith, Black intellect, and Black communal life. His passing leaves a profound absence in the lives of those who knew him, learned from him, worshiped with him, and were strengthened by his extraordinary ministry. Dr. Turner’s legacy reminds us that scholarship and service, preaching and pastoral care, academic rigor and spiritual conviction, are not separate callings but sacred companions in the work of freedom.

For more than five decades, Dr. Turner served as pastor, preacher, teacher, and administrator with uncommon faithfulness. At Duke University and Duke Divinity School, he shaped generations of students through his teaching in homiletics, worship, and African American religious traditions. He was more than a professor; he was a mentor, a guide, and a living testimony to the transformative power of theological education rooted in the Black church. His work consistently bridged the academy and the church, demonstrating that the life of the mind must be joined to the life of the Spirit.

Dr. Turner’s pastoral ministry was equally distinguished. He served faithfully in Durham for decades, most notably at Mount Level Missionary Baptist Church, where his preaching, presence, and public witness reflected a deep commitment to justice, education, and community uplift. His ministry was not confined to the pulpit. He understood that the gospel demands action, and he embodied that conviction on all fronts and especially with his support for the next generation. His leadership helped build institutions, nurture students, and strengthen the bonds between faith communities and the wider world.

For the Society for the Study of Black Religion, Rev. Dr. William C. Turner’s life stands as a powerful reminder of our own vocation. He exemplified the seriousness, creativity, and moral depth that Black religious study requires. He taught us that Black religion is not only a field of inquiry but a living tradition of resistance, resilience, hope, and holy imagination. We honor him for his scholarship, celebrate him for his preaching, and bless God for his witness. May his memory continue to inspire our work, sharpen our commitments, and deepen our devotion to the God who calls us into justice, truth, and love.
